Lumen/watt: When we compare lumens/watt, incandescent, CFL and LED produce 16,60 and 100 respectively. Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) use up to 75 percent less electricity than incandescent lamps. LEDs use up to 50% less electricity than CFLs. Lifetime: Lifetime of a LED bulb is approximately 50000 hours which is 6 times that of CFL(8000 hours) and 40 times that of incandescent bulb(1200 hours). Bulbs burn out quickly when operated at high temperatures. LEDs have a heat sink which prevents them from attaining high temperatures. CFL gets dimmer with time but brightness of LED remains the same in its entire lifetime. Beam angle: It is measure of light spread in degrees. The main difference among bulbs is that LEDs are unidirectional whereas CFLs and incandescent spread light in all directions. Low wattage LEDs are suitable as spot lights. LEDs of beam angle greater than 120° give the same effect as incandescent or fluorescent. Environmental impact: A 3 star LED bulb reduces 6.8 kg of CO2, when it replaces a CFL and around 51.5 kg of CO2 when it replaces an incandescent bulb in a year. CFLs contain mercury and hence should be disposed as hazardous wastes. When a fluorescent bulb breaks, materials present in it get vapourised quickly and are absorbed into skin.
